A new one solved the problem. I had been using one of these devices for several years, but suddenly started getting a BSOD on bootup, with the Stop Error implicating "rt2500usb.sys". Just two weeks ago I purchased it directly from Amazon for $32.98, but it's currently being offered by other merchants at mostly higher prices. If you have a similar issue, I recommend uninstalling the old Linksys software and using the software provided with the new device -- it's likely to contain some fixes.Incidentally, the price on this item seems to fluctuate widely and suddenly. That file is installed by the Linksys adapter, so it was natural to suppose that the cause was a software issue. After various tests, however, I determined that the physical adapter had become defective.
It's made a big difference for me, pages load much faster and usually do not stall. It's backwards compadible with the B signals from a modem. I had an older version of a linksys network adapter. It works easily with my windows xp. It's definetly a nice upgrade if you have an older adapter. It was a wireless B, and only had a max of 11mps. This is a wireless G which receives 54 mps.
Just try finding a copy of the installation disk to set up the WUSB54G should you loose it. Too many other easy install and plug and play devices out there to fool around with this one. I have tried to use it from WIN 98 to Vista and got it installed one time on a computer and it worked for a short while.
I currently have a Linksys Router on my home network. You are supposed to install the software first before plugging this "thing" in. I have been computing since 1983 and I have installed all types of devices and software on all types of computers.
Wait until the setup software tells you to plug it in and then if you're lucky it might work on your system. Look elsewhere for a solution for your wireless needs. I have tried several times in the past to use this WUSB54G - "POS".
First of all it is not plug and play for sure.
So i started looking around and came upon this wireless adapter. It works flawlessly and gave me excellent reception. I could still use the internet if i use an ethernet cable.
I got it to work within half an hour because i entered the wrong wep code. I've been using this since yesterday so i'll update this within a few weeks and let you know how it's going. Be sure to install the driver before using.
My HP Pavillion Laptop's wireless went out on me a few months back and i was so frustrated. I'm so glad i bought it. :)
But it was not portable anymore. I read some reviews and decided to just order it and take my chances.
Not much to say. for about 15 minutes then would "freeze" on me. The inclusion of a one sheet piece of paper in the box instructing me NOT to use the install disk if I had Windows Vista (and i do) was a clue of things to come. Finally got the correct driver installed.
Finally returned it to Linksys. It recognized my wireless network but wouldn't connect me to the internet. a cycle of install, freeze up, uninstall, and reinstall. They sent a replacement which thus far (knock on wood) seems to be working. would work for 15 minutres or so then die. It didn't work.
This went on for several days. (At least after a week it still works). I was instructed to go to the Linksys website to download the correct driver which proved utterly confusing so I wound up doing a live chat session with a 3rd world cust service rep with broken English. The device worked.
